Hi, I’m John Ensley
I’m a Dad, a Grandpa, an entrepreneur, a veteran, an adventurer and a consummate lover of life and liberty. My mission is to help families, businesses and investors accumulate more wealth and experience maximum safety, control and privacy in their financial lives.
My adventurous spirit was developed from an early age by my parents, who are today retired “snowbirds” traveling the country with their RV. I grew up white water rafting on Southern Oregon’s Rogue River as well as snow skiing, camping and backpacking in the Cascade and Siskiyou mountain wildernesses.
I enlisted in the U.S. Army immediately after graduating from high school. After completing infantry training and graduating from both the Army’s Airborne and Air Assault Schools, I served with the 101st Airborne Division, and in Germany.
After military service I cut my teeth in the business world with one of the largest federally contracted student loan collection firms in the country but have had a wide range of experience encompassing entrepreneurship, management, sales, real estate developer, sailing instructor, bakery owner…
I also put my Army experience to good use in civilian life as a volunteer with Search and Rescue teams in the Columbia River Gorge and the Gifford Pinchot wilderness areas. I served as President of Wind River Search and Rescue and as a reserve sheriff’s deputy in Skamania County WA.
Wake Up Call
When you live through challenging life circumstances, you have a choice. You can get frustrated and upset or blame whoever or whatever is responsible, or you can use the events as a springboard to something better. When I lost nearly all of my company retirement plan during the dot-com crash, I took what was left and invested in a real estate development.
You know where this is going, right? When the “Great Recession” struck in 2008, the project was about half-competed and when the smoke cleared, I had lost nearly everything and was buried in debt.
While it’s hard to see a silver lining at times like these, these events became my wake-up call and now I have the good fortune to go to work every day in an incredible business where I can help others realize their dreams and avoid the tragic financial mistakes I made. While I would never want to relive those experiences, I am very grateful for them because I would not be where (or who) I am today if not for these challenging circumstances.
A New Direction
Starting over from scratch, I began an intense, self-directed financial education. I studied hundreds of books, a practice I continue to this day. When some of the books I came across described something I had never heard of before, something referred to as “The Infinite Banking Concept” or “Bank On Yourself,” my interest was piqued.
Like many others, I had big dreams that included long range sailing, extensive travel and establishing an international residence. These concepts seemed like the perfect platform to climb my way out of the financial hole I was in and help me achieve my dreams of adventure too.
The problem was that every advisor I approached for help either didn’t know what I was talking about or tried to talk me out of it. I eventually found a “Bank On Yourself Authorized Advisor” and set up my own plan, which turned out to be the best financial decision I’ve ever made. Over the past decade this financial strategy has been instrumental to overcoming the challenges I faced and is turning many of my dreams into reality.
After seeing the success of these concepts my own life and recognizing that most financial advisors do not understand it themselves, I developed a passion to share the concept with anyone and everyone. With my corporate background and business experience I had many of the skills I needed to start my own business. I decided to take the leap and secured insurance licensing and completed training to become one of only about 200 Bank On Yourself Authorized Advisors nationwide. I founded JEnsley Financial, LLC in 2012.
What I Do Today
In addition to insurance and annuity-based retirement strategies, I have a passion for helping adventurous individuals, couples and families plan for adventure-based dreams and goals, whether it’s sailing to distant shores, exploring the country by RV or extended travel overseas.
To do this, I guide my clients through a comprehensive design process and the financial tools and strategies we utilize help them pursue their goals in a way that will protect and enhance their long-term financial security.
Too often people either sacrifice their long-term financial well-being for the sake of achieving their shorter-term goals or they just give up on their dreams altogether but it does not have to be that way.
What I Don’t Do
I am not a certified financial planner. I do not offer “investment” or “tax” advice or make “buy” or “sell” recommendations for stocks, bonds or mutual funds, other than to recommend that you get out of the rigged Wall Street casino altogether.
I am licensed and trained in the use of specially structured life insurance and annuity contracts in the strategic financial design process. I co-create customized financial strategies, with you, to plot a step by step course to achieve your financial and adventure goals without taking unnecessary risks.
I Get It
I get it because I’m an adventurer myself. I’m a licensed sailboat captain and certified sailing instructor. I’ve cruised extensively in the Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, Canadian Gulf Islands, Mexico’s Pacific Coast, The Sea of Cortez and the Caribbean.
My home base is in Southwest Washington State, but I currently live and work part of the year from La Paz, Mexico. When I’m not working with clients or studying, you will find me sailing, wind surfing, snorkeling, hiking, biking or exploring the Baja Peninsula and Western States by RV.
Finally, I am a member of a new breed of entrepreneur – I’m a digital entrepreneur. That means you won’t find me in a posh office building or fancy conference room. I work with the vast majority of my clients “virtually,” utilizing web-based video conferencing and the telephone for dynamic and interactive meetings with my clients.
I look forward to the opportunity to serve you and yours soon!
